Members’ Corner

Why Drop A Dress Size (Dads) Is The Perfect Training Package To Get You Started!

DADS has completely changed who I am today. I chose to do DADS as I was sick and tired of going into a clothing shop and having to buy outfits that were a LOT larger than what I was used to. Not only that, I also had a family trip to Samoa coming up and there was absolutely NO WAY that I was going there feeling as I was.

There’s just one word for my DADS journey – FANTASTIC. I really enjoyed the training – Sha and the team were so supportive and motivating and it was a neat little ‘family’ we had. A few months have passed since completing the training and to this day I am still getting compliments from gym members and staff, friends and family. I’ve also noticed that I am a lot more self-confident and feel a lot more feminine. I wish I had done this a lot sooner.

I am still keeping up with the exercise (good old Maidstone Hill) and the eating plan as well (with a couple of treats here and there) but other than that I have managed to keep the weight off which is a really good feeling.

It was hard work but it was worth it. I plan to do another round on DADS in the near future. Amberlee (Upper Hutt Receptionist)

From DADS to POD Training: “I’m On-Track!”

Last year I kept telling my boyfriend that I was going to sign up and start doing personal training sessions at work. I had been talking to the trainers and getting an idea of what challenges I would face, and finally agreed early September 2011 to sign up with Terry and start doing something about my ever-increasing weight.

At my first assessment I weighed in at 95.5kg! I could not believe that I had got that big as I was regular Group Exercise attendee. Over September Terry and I would meet on a Wednesday at 9.30am and complete various workouts together but we weren’t really seeing results. Mid-October the final round of Drop A Dress Size (DADS) for 2011 was about to start and I was about to finish University (which I always blamed for my bad eating habits) so it was perfect timing.

DADS is a six-week kick-start programme to provide you with the tools and knowledge to get back on track to a healthy lifestyle. I was the heaviest girl out of the squad weighing in at 94.3kg which made even me more motivated to get results considering I was the youngest in the squad. Over the six-week journey there were smiles, blood, sweat and tears to reach my final weigh in at 86.7kg. The squad decided to carry through with the DADS extension which provided us with another three weeks of training with Terry. And after the final nine weeks I had got down to 84kg which allowed me to say that I had ‘officially’ lost 10kg since September!

Since completing DADS I have maintained the lifestyle changes that were covered during the training. The education I gathered from DADS has allowed me to further my weight loss to weigh in at 80kg, meaning I’ve managed a total weight loss of 15kg! I have also continued my personal training sessions with Terry. Our squad has decided to break down into POD training groups. This consists of six one-hour sessions training once a week.

I have a final goal weight that I would like to reach for my 21st in early April which has provided me with motivation to help me achieve my goals. To help me to do this I have also joined ‘Team Lifestyle’ for the AMI Round The Bays. I have entered the half-marathon aiming to run. I have also enrolled to complete the next term of BoxSquad X which starts February 15th. I can’t wait! Kirsty (Lower Hutt Receptionist)

Why 10 Karapotis?

How time flies! It seems like just the other day I was asked to write an article for the newsletter about my last Karapoti challenge. Well the bike is tired, the body is tired but some how the goal will be achieved.

So, why 10 Karapotis I’m asked? On reflection I guess it’s because I’m a bit of an endurance freak. I have completed more than 10 sub-90 minutes Half Marathons (21.1 Ks), more than 10 sub-3 hour Standard Marathons (42.2 Ks) with a Personal Best of 2 hours 40 minutes and several Ultra Marathons (50Ks+) including 8 Comrades Marathons (88Ks+).

Considering what the body has endured, an inevitable routine knee surgery was required last October 2011. Unfortunately there were a few complications but the good news is, I’m back in the saddle. Once again Terry’s training program, which is a typical KISS (Keep It Super Simple) program, has stood me in good stead. Not to forget the experienced advice from Tyral our resident knee reconstruction guru. It’s so hard to achieve peak fitness and it’s lost in the blink of an eye. Recovery has been steady but sure and Karapoti Number 10 will be a real challenge that I look forward to. Being there at the start will be an achievement let alone completing the race.

To all members participating in the Karapoti Classic this year have a great safe ride, hope you all achieve your personal goals and that the weather is kind! Tom Greenwood

Sha’s Recommendations:

If new to endurance racing or ‘doing it for fun’ I recommend you do three rides per week and gradually build up to six hours of training per week.

Lifestyle offers a number of RiDE classes on our existing timetables across both clubs. RiDE is a cycling to music class on stationary bikes. Instructors create atmosphere with music and choreography and specific cycling cues that make you feel you are riding in the true outdoors. You will be coached to climb, race and power train to music so you get the full body aerobic and anaerobic challenge.

This class will mimic the terrain and intensity of the Karapoti Classic, but not the length of your ride on the day. So pushing yourself every time in these classes will assist in your training.

RiDE will help you strengthen the number one muscle – the heart. A lot of your time round Karapoti will be spent grinding away at one of the three huge climbs on the verge of oxygen debt. You’ve got to raise the point at which you start running out of breath (your anaerobic threshold) and get comfortable sitting at this level, which within tracks in a class this will occur, if you are pushing yourself.

Ride a bit longer or a bit harder than last week and you’ll force continued adaptation and improvement. You will become fitter and stronger to complete the terrain of Karapoti.

Find more information and my five week training plan here!

Craig has Good Reason TO CELEBRATE…

After 10 years of inactivity my weight had increased to nearly 20 stone (127kg). I lost about 15kg ‘going it alone’ and then joined Lifestyle Health and Fitness in the winter to try and keep my exercise up through the colder months.

I started RBT with trainer Steph Vendt straight away and this has been the major factor in keeping motivated and active. I’ve lost a total of 30kg over 18 months now and am much fitter and more active than I’ve been for years. I completed the Taupo off-road Half-Marathon and the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge in 2011. I’ve also decreased my BioAge from a few years above my actual age to a couple of years under.

Working with Steph I’ve set new goals for 2012; these include losing a bit more weight and completing the Wellington Marathon in June. Lifestyle has been a really positive influence, the friendly, relaxed atmosphere makes going to the gym a whole lot easier. The email tips, text messages from my trainer and the newsletter all help to keep me motivated. Committing to RBT is a really good way to keep on track; Steph ‘holds me accountable’ for reachng my goals, makes sure I always have a new challenge and that going to the gym doesn’t become a chore. Lifestyle is now a part of my routine, helping keep me healthy and sane. I’m really looking forward to continuing to improve and getting even fitter! Craig Butler

New Member Irene Lives Zumba Fitness!

I have been to Zumba Fitness classes for two months, it’s really fantastic. The more I participate in this class the more I love it. At first I thought ‘it’s difficult for me’, but when I started joining in, I found it’s really easy and enjoyable. Once you start then you will find it’s hard to quit. I love Zumba, it makes me feel like exercise is easy. I feel I am healthier and more dynamic than ever before. Irene Long

We would also like to thank Irene for being our advertising ‘hero’ for Wellington’s Asian Community Directory www.iwellington.co.nz and magazine.
We’re Running with ‘Team Lifestyle’ this year!

Just wanted to say that my friend, Lynley, and I did the AMI Round The Bays as individuals last year. We have recently joined Lifestyle Health and Fitness after spending considerable time choosing a new gym after Contours Hutt City closed. We are thoroughly enjoying being members at Lifestyle and I am enjoying having Terry as my new trainer. We are both looking forward to being part of Team Lifestyle at this year’s Round the Bays.

A few months ago I approached each of them with the idea of putting together a POD Training Group, as all four of them are striving to achieve the same goals (to lose weight, get fitter and just to feel better about themselves). I felt POD Training would help to motivate them and build a group network where they could communicate with each other and talk about the issues that they each faced and to help each other achieve their goals!

So I offered them a free POD Session to see how they would cope with it!!

RESULT! THEY LOVED IT… especially the camaraderie! The jokes and the jibes that were going around were hilarious… but most importantly the training session, when one person was finding an exercise hard the team would pick him up by cheering him on and motivate him to ‘go harder’!! The session was based on the group’s specific needs and tailored to their abilities.

Oh yeah! It was a big BUZZ for the Group when Nick Willis walked over and introduced himself to us. Nick was very interested to find out what the men were training for (“The London Olympics” one of the boys yelled out!) so we couldn’t miss a photo opportunity with one our finest 1500 metre runners (thanks Nick you’re inspiring!) and a great role model.

So you have decided to take on the Karapoti challenge?

Fantastic! At the time of writing (30 January) that leaves you five weeks to prepare. While five weeks is not a lot of time, it is ‘do-able’ so I have put together some last minute training guidelines. With just five weeks to go your main goals would be to get some time on the saddle/bike and strengthen up those leg muscles.

To find out more information on long rides you can go online to www.karapoti.co.nz. The information below will guide you to use Lifestyle’s existing Group Exercise classes to get a little fitter and stronger to tackle the 20k ride.

Recommendations:

If new to endurance sports or ‘doing it for fun’ we recommend you do three rides per week and gradually build up to six hours of training per week.

Lifestyle Health and Fitness offers a number of RiDE classes on our existing timetables across both clubs.

RiDE will help you strengthen your ‘number one’ muscle – the heart. A lot of your time round Karapoti will be spent grinding away at one of the three huge climbs on the verge of oxygen debt. You’ve got to raise the point at which you start running out of breath (your anaerobic threshold) and get comfortable sitting at this level, which will occur naturally when working to tracks in a class environment, provided you are following the cues and also pushing yourself.

Ride a bit longer or a bit harder than last week and you’ll force continued adaptation and improvement. You will become fitter and stronger to complete the terrain of Karapoti.

Another component to work on for this event is building up some leg strength. Try a bit of gym work (squats, lunges and leg extensions, etc) or take advantage of our popular 30 minute weight to music class MuscleXpress (MX). Again see our timetables online to see what times these are on.

It’s not too late to hire a Results Based Trainer to help you prepare. It takes 4-6 weeks to get a training adaption; all eight trainers across Lifestyle are available if you would like them to guide you through a five-week program. All trainers are posted on our website, contact me, Sha Bannister, and I can organise for you to meet one immediately.

Good luck on your five-week journey to the Karapoti. As mentioned these are just basic training guidelines, for more information you can email me or go online to www.karapoti.co.nz.

Good Luck, train hard.
See you at the Finish Line!

TIPS:

Template provided to plan your last 5 weeks before the event.

Plan in advance – you are more likely to stick to a plan!

Good nutrition and hydration makes good training.

Make sure you are injury-free.

The odd run or swim can make good cross-training.

Please follow www.karapoti.co.nz rest day recommendations.

When they told me about a new and improved BoxSquad format, I wondered how Lifestyle could improve on what they already had – and then along came BoxSquad X. It is a total body workout that not only includes boxing, but also kickboxing, along with fitness and core strengthening and, if that wasn’t enough, they also throw in some exercise drill stations. The sessions are more challenging for me and I get a great sense of satisfaction after each session”.

Lifestyle’s first ever ‘Kids Bootcamp’ kicked off 31st October. Barb Sellers and Jenny Fawcett, two regulars at Lifestyle Upper Hutt, asked Trainer Sha Bannister if she could run a Bootcamp for kids, their kids wanted to get fit with their friends, they wanted to do what their mums do at the gym. Barb and Jenny got the word out, and four weeks later 12 enthusiastic school kids were signed up, issued with their own official Bootcamp Tee and now train on Mondays from 3:30-4:30pm over a six-week period. The kids just love it and, just like the adults, they are sore the next day.

Lifestyle is are hoping to build on growing Kids Bootcamp. If you think your child has what it takes, our next intake will be February next year. Email sha.bannister@lifestylegym.co.nz if you would like more information.

Josh Sellers: “I like Bootcamp because I get to work out with my mates. I love it!”
Alex Sellers: “Being in Bootcamp is fun! I especially like the team racing and WINNING!”

Our Six-week Adult Bootcamp squad has 27 keen fitness enthusiasts. They are here for one thing – “to be challenged both physically and mentally”.

And, above all, they come because Bootcamp is fun! Yes, you may laugh quietly, but ask any one of the squad; “While you’re doing it, it sucks and it burns like hell, and you’re gasping for air but, after it’s all over, you’re on such a ‘high’ and you feel fantastic”.

If you want to kick 2012 off with a “fitness challenge” the next Adult Bootcamp will be Saturday January 28th 2012. See reception for an enrollment form or email Sha Bannister.

Leah Murphy: “Thanks to my sister for signing me up and my fear of strangers… Bootcamp totally puts you out of your comfort zone and forces you to deal with your insecurities as well as pushing your body to its limits!”
Gina Takes Out ‘Fight Gone Bad” Women’s Title

I moved here from Canada almost three years ago. Being a fitness nut I was looking for something I could take up that would give me the same challenge that ice hockey did back home and I struggled to find a sport that had that same intensity.

I had always kept fit at the gym but never thought of it as a place to compete or excel until I discovered CrossFit. The minute I tried it I was hooked! It was a way of turning my everyday workouts into a competition with myself and others.

Ryan Wall, who manages Lifestyle’s Wellington club, reckoned I was pretty good and encouraged me to start training for this particular citywide competition. It was a charity event that was run every year, this year raising money for the Life Flight Trust. The competition was one workout called ‘Fight Gone Bad’, which was the hardest 17 minutes of my life! But despite the butterflies I managed to put in a good effort and came out on top of the Elite Women’s division. It really spoke volumes to me about the calibre of training we are doing at Lifestyle and inspired me to keep pushing with hope of doing another competition in the new year.

We are nearing the end of the final round of Drop A Dress Size 2011 and across both Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt Clubs we have a number of members who are on track to reach their 4.6kg (Dress Size weight).

Brother and sister Brad and Melissa, from the Upper Hutt club, decided it was time to get some motivation, education and accountability. They both signed up for the last D.A.D. S squad of the year and both are motivated to continue with the three-week extension that carries over after the six-week program.

Brad and Melissa can’t believe the improvement to their energy levels now that they are eating healthier food and balancing their lifestyle with some regular exercise. In the past they had both thought they were doing enough to maintain a ‘healthy’ lifestyle but for some reason this was not translating to the numbers on the scales. Thanks to Drop A Dress Size and the D.A.D.S food diary it didn’t take long at all to find out what they had been doing wrong for so long (yep, you guessed it… bad eating habits)!!! By the time Week Five rolled around Brad had lost 5.5kg and Melissa 4.5kg.

Brad and Melissa also take advantage of our Group Exercise classes, they both think the instructors ROCK!!! Together they attend a good mix of classes including RiDE, MuscleXpress, Zumba Fitness, QuickRiDE and the Maidstone Hill.

FINAL RESULT: Brad lost 7.1kg and Melissa lost 7.0kg! THAT’S AWESOME GUYS!

Earlier this year I made a bold statement to the office lady that she was not to order me a larger-sized uniform. Unfortunately the time was fast approaching when I was going to have to eat my words and upsize.

My wife had decided she would be doing the next round of D.A.D.S and suggested I should join her. This is to a person who has never set a foot in a gym!

Well, I have come to end of my six weeks, it hasn’t been easy for a ‘non-gym’ bunny, but it has been successful. Trainer Sha Bannister provided the necessary encouragement and motivation to stay on track. Sha treats everyone differently, tailoring the workout to your ability or to what she believes you can achieve.

It’s hard work, but if you stick to the eating plan and do the exercise you’ll get the results. Above all don’t cheat yourself!

Robin Morgan (pictured) lost 9.3kg and his wife Jo (UH/Wgtn member) lost 5.4kg!

November 16th 2011 is a day that I won’t forget in a hurry. This was the date of the Hutt City Triathlon, a race that I have participated in for quite a few years now. Only difference was that this year I had my younger brother Daniel to worry about. Leading up to the race we had been giving each other a hard time about who was going to beat who? It had even become the topic of the month at the gym! I had a lot to lose as I could think of nothing worse than my 14-year-old brother beating me in a sport that I had always considered MINE!!

We lined up at the start line side by side, both feeling the nerves… The race started with a 4km run/sprint (Daniel and I ran together the whole way) then it was on to the bike (an 18km loop… still neck and neck). At this stage I must admit that I was starting to get a little worried as I thought that I would of been ahead of him by now. We finished the bike together and it was all down to the swim (I remember saying to people before the race that if it came down to the swim I would beat him… unfortunately this was not to be). We swam together for most of the 300m until the last 100m where Daniel picked up the pace and got in front of me… and ‘NEK MINUTE’ – he had beaten me! No matter – I was still proud of my bro and also happy with my race too. Overall Daniel came 3rd and I came 4th (Daniel was 1st in his age group and I was first woman).

Bring on 2012… it’s ON Daniel

I started at Lifestyle because I had reached a point where my clothes didn’t fit me and I didn’t like how I looked or how I felt. It was stressful because although I didn’t feel the right weight for me, some of my friends were trying to make me feel better and were telling me that I looked OK and not to worry. A couple of really honest friends said to me that I had an option to go and buy larger sizes, but I would have the same problem again in a year or so, or I could get off my butt and start exercising.

I researched the local gyms and chose Lifestyle because I literally have to drive past it on my way home. There is no way to avoid going to the gym now. The team are awesome, very approachable and friendly. The turning point for me was doing the Drop A Dress Size (D.A.D.S) class. It gave me the structure I needed and Trainer Bernie Semau and the women I was training with were very supportive.

I have lost 11kgs, exercise regularly, eat more carefully, completed a 10km run and I just finished my first triathlon ever! It was a 4km run, 18km cycle (I hired a bike) and a 300m swim. I hadn’t got on a bike since I was 16 years old, but you never forget how to ride one. My time was 1.16.39 whooo hooo! The best time was 00:48:11 and the worst time was 02:24:48, so I was 0.1.08 faster than the average time of 01:17:4. In my wildest dreams, I was aiming for 2 hours so I totally smashed that goal.

You guys have got me fit and it has been awesome fun. Thanks in particular to our lovely Taryn who keeps suggesting new goals for me! At the end of the event she suggested an Iron Man for my next event (hahaha). What I have learned out of this is that you only live once, nothing is impossible, and even if something seems scary try to say yes!

Katan’s ‘Journey of a Thousand Miles’

This year I was one of 9000 plus entrants on the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge Saturday 26th November challenging myself yet again for a consecutive 5th personal best. Six years ago if someone had told me that I would feel comfortable wearing cycling shorts and tight fitting cycling vest I would have laughed out loud.

My journey started in 2007. I used to struggle to do 10 press ups and ended up gasping for breath during MuscleXpress and ThaiFit classes. I needed a goal and this is when I decided to register for the 160km Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge.

Whilst riding various emotions flash through my mind, setbacks, those whom you love, the effort that goes into the training and friends you make along the way. I’ve now finished my fifth Taupo and feel great for doing so, it is hard! Many cyclists may not have reached their potential Personal Best due to the adverse weather conditions putting us to the test, with big pine trees swaying and 85km winds making for a strong headwind or crosswind, BUT that’s no excuse. My time this year was 6hrs 20mins. It won’t break any records, but I have completed my own challenge and set myself a target for next year. Maybe next time, with some more training I’ll get to first place!
